Tao XU (徐涛) was born in a small village, Fuyang city, Anhui Province in 1985. During his university entrance examination, he accidentally chose a major related to chemistry---Pharmaceutical Engineering. He earned his B. S. at East China University of Science and Technology in 2007. Then, he continued his studies at Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, CAS (SIOC), and joined the laboratory of Professor Guosheng Liu. His doctoral research included the discovery of several reactions that focused on intermolecular or intramolecular transition metal-catalyzed hydroamination, fluoroamination of alkenes, alkynes, or allenes. After graduation, he worked at WuXi AppTec Company, Ltd for one year where he had learned the industrial process development. In 2013, he started his postdoctoral research working with Professor Xile Hu at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland. Therein, he developed two useful addition reactions with iron or copper catalyst. He also gained knowledge in bio-mimetic small molecule activation, and successfully obtained a functional model of [Fe]-Hydrogenase. Tao began his independent career at Tongji University in 2017. Recently, his research has focused on the developing new methodologies for asymmetric carbon-carbon bond formation and multi-catalyst relay systems for the transformation of  carbon-oxygen double (single) bonds.
